Tigers Answer Challenge, Salvage Game in Shorter Series

ROME, Ga. – Right-handers Brenton Thiels and Mason Hollander combined to limit Shorter to just a pair of runs, leading West Alabama to a 6-2 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over the Hawks Saturday at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.

The win allowed the Tigers to salvage a win in the three-game series and improved the Tigers to 5-14 overall and 3-3 in GSC play. Shorter dropped to 12-7 and 6-3.

"Today we put together quality pitching, good defense and we hit the baseball well," West Alabama head coach Gary Rundles said. "I am proud of the guys. I challenged them after yesterday's games and they responded in the right way.

"We have an opportunity to keep the momentum going with a five-game homestand coming up this week," Rundles said. "After a non-conference game midweek, we have arguably the top team in the league coming to town."

The Tigers return to Tartt Field for a non-conference single game against Tuskegee Wednesday at 3 p.m. West Florida visits UWA for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. Shorter has the week off before traveling to West Georgia for a three-game GSC series starting Friday.

Thiels (2-1) scattered five hits and allowed two runs over five innings pitched for the win. He struck out  five and walked two. Mason Hollander worked four scoreless innings in relief for his second save, allowing just two hits while striking out six. Shorter reliever Trevor Nanney (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs and three hits in three innings of work.

Trailing 2-1 after five innings, West Alabama pushed across five runs from the sixth inning on to secure the win.

UWA scored three runs in the sixth inning, tying the game on a Jonathan Thibodeau single that chased Braydon Lyman and took the lead for good on a Houston Kitterman single to left, scoring Gavin Rogers. Braxton Bullard's sacrifice fly scored Josh Bower to lift the Tigers to a 4-2 advantage.

A sac fly from Kyle Vogler pushed Kitterman across in the eighth and Rogers' third home run, a solo shot, completed the scoring for the Tigers in the top of the ninth.

Rogers put together a 3-for-4 day and scored three runs to pace the Tiger offense. Jake Nemith and Thibodeau chipped in two hits each. Kitterman drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers.

Andres Ferreiro collected three of Shorter's seven hits.
