Baseball Takes Game One Against Montevallo

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama got the 6-2 win over Montevallo on Friday afternoon at Tartt Field behind a strong pitching performance and two homeruns in game one of a Gulf South Conference series.

"Mason (Hollander) threw strikes and commanded the strike-zone. He did an outstanding job for us today and did what he needed to do to get us a win. Mateo (Lozano) did a great job closing the game for us," head baseball coach Gary Rundles said.

"Offensively, we had some key hits from some guys that put us in a position to win the game," Rundles said.

West Alabama improved to 10-25 overall and 8-11 in GSC action. Montevallo fell to 26-9 and 11-7.

Mason Hollander (2-2) pitched 7.1 innings giving up two earned runs, four hits, and struck 11 of the 29 batters he faced out. Mateo Lozano came in for relief and worked the final 1.2 innings allowing two hits and working his way out of a bases loaded threat in the eighth inning to earn his first save of the year.

Brayden Lyman drove in Jake Nemith in the fourth inning with a double. After Gavin Rogers got on with a walk, Josh Bower hit a three-run shot to left field which was his only hit.

Nemith hit a solo homerun in the fifth inning, his sixth homerun of the year and Bower scored another run on a throwing error in the sixth inning.

The Tiger bats had six hits, five runs batted in, and got on with two walks. UWA left five runners on base.
