Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Tigers Lose Season Opener at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The West Alabama men's soccer team started the 2022 regular season Thursday afternoon and lost a physical contest at Carson-Newman 2-1 at Harvey Stadium. 
 
The Tigers fall to 0-1 on the season and Carson-Newman moves to 1-0. 
 
The game featured 27 fouls and 17 cards were issued out, seven going to the Eagles and 10 going to the Tigers. 
 
West Alabama's goalkeeper, Harry Deveney picked up five saves in the game and allowed both goals in the 82 minutes he played. 
 
UWA struck first in the 67th minute when Harry Colville knocked in a penalty kick to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
 
In the 76th minute, Carson-Newman had a penalty kick and Jannik Shulte put the ball in the net to tie the game.
 
The Tigers had an opportunity to take the lead in the 82nd minute and an offsides call was made and Carson-Newman's Willem Krujik took advantage to score the game-winning goal seconds later. Nic Carsh delivered the assist to Krujik for the goal.
 
West Alabama took six shots during the game and the Eagles fired off 16 shot attempts. Deveney had all five of the UWA saves and Carson-Newman had zero saves. 
 
UWA had one shot-on-goal while the Eagles had seven on target. Gustavo Moses Bessa and Shulte recorded two shots on frame for Carson-Newman.

UWA will return to the pitch on Sept. 2 at Eckerd College at 7 p.m. Eckerd opens the 2022 season against Delta State on Thursday night.
