Tigers Drop Four-Set Match to Union in GSC Opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama volleyball team forced Union to four sets by claiming the victory in the first one but dropped the following three sets to open up Gulf South Conference play with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-20) loss to the Bulldogs Tuesday evening inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. 
 
The Tigers are now 5-8 overall and 0-1 in GSC play. The Bulldogs improved to 8-4 overall and are 1-0 in the conference. 
 
Madison Fisher tallied 12 kills with five service aces and five digs. Ally Craig added 10 kills for UWA attackers.
 
Maddie Van Dyke dished out 14 assists. MacKenzie Wells posted a season-high of 25 digs and five assists. Amelia Johnigan sent back five blocks.
 
Union held the edge in kills (45-39), aces (10-9), blocks (10-6), assists (43-33), and digs (68-60).
 
Union jumped to a 6-2 lead off an ace, three kills, and two UWA errors. West Alabama then went on a 5-0 run with help from Fisher, allowing the Tigers to take the 7-6 lead. 
 
UWA extended the lead to 15-8 off of kills and Union errors. The Tigers took advantage of three errors the Bulldogs made in the last four plays to close out the set with a 25-19 victory. 
 
Union battled back and won the following three sets. Emily Grace Calhoon paced the Bulldogs with 12 kills. Jordan Vick had 35 assists. Sydney Sample led the Bulldogs in digs with 17. 
 
The Tigers return to action on Friday as they take on Alabama Huntsville in a GSC matchup. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside Kelly Court at Spragins Hall in Huntsville, Alabama.
