UWA Volleyball Takes Alabama Huntsville To Four Sets

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - West Alabama volleyball team took Alabama Huntsville to four sets but came up short in the Gulf South Conference match and took a 3-1 defeat from the Chargers Friday evening at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.

The Tigers dropped to 5-9 overall and are now 0-2 in GSC play. The Chargers improved to 5-7 and are now 1-0 in the conference. 

The Chargers jumped to a 4-0 lead to start set one. The Tigers cut the lead to 4-2 off a service ace from MacKenzie Wells and a UAH service error. The Chargers went on another 4-0 run to improve the lead to 8-2. A kill from Nathalia Medeiros and a UAH error trimmed the Chargers lead to 8-4. Alabama Huntsville went on a 17-8 run to close out set one with a 25-12 win over UWA. 

The second set was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. Alabama Huntsville closed out the second set with two kills, two service aces, and a UWA error the last five plays to claim set two with a 25-17 win. 

Down 2-0, the Tigers battled back in the third set to claim the 25-22 victory over the Chargers. It was a 20-20 tie but the Tigers used a kill by Medeiros and Ally Craig and three UAH errors to their advantage to claim the win. 

UAH closed out the fourth set with a 25-17 victory to win the match, 3-1.

Craig led UWA attackers with 10 kills. Medeiros added six kills. Madison Fisher added five slams and seven digs.

Wells collected 21 digs in the match and three service aces. Chyna Dixon followed with 12 digs and led the team in assists with 18. 

The Chargers held the edge in kills (33-29), service aces (15-6), blocks (9-5). UWA held the advantage in digs (53-52).

UAH Gracie McGee led the Chargers with nine kills and eight digs. Colby Charland dished out 19 assists for UAH. 

The Tigers return to action on Saturday as they take on Montevallo in a GSC matchup. First serve is set for 2 p.m. inside Trustmark Arena in Montevallo, Alabama.
