UWA Volleyball Battled Hard but Came Up Short in GSC Match Against AUM

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama volleyball team took a tough loss in a Gulf South Conference match against Auburn Montgomery Thursday evening inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. 

The Tigers dropped to 5-11 overall and are now 0-5 in GSC play. The Warhawks improved to 8-7 overall and are 2-1 in the conference.

Madison Fisher was the only Tiger to post double figures in kills. Fisher paced UWA with 11 kills, nine digs, and two service aces. MacKenzie Wells tallied nine digs and spun in three service aces. Chyna Dixon dished out 11 assists and had three aces. Amelia Johnigan sent back four blocks. 

AUM jumped to a 9-3 lead to start the first set. A kill by Fisher, Johnigan, and Ally Craig and two service aces allowed UWA to trim the lead to 10-9. The Warhawks then went on a 15-7 run to close out the first set with a 25-16 win. 

The Tigers jumped to an exciting 7-1 lead to start the second set. The Warhawks brought the set to a 7-7 tie when they went on a 6-0 run. It was a back-and-forth battle until the end, but the Warhawks scored the final three points to take the second set, 25-22.

UWA did not back down. Trailing 11-6, the Tigers used a kill and a service ace by Dixon, a block by Johanna Martin and Nathalia Medeiros, along with an AUM error to trim the Warhawks lead to 11-10. AUM then went on a 6-0 run to improve the score, 17-10. The Warhawks claimed the final eight points in the set to close out set three with a 25-15 win and a 3-0 match victory. 

Ylenia De Mango led the Warhawks with 11 kills and four digs. Alessia Cappai posted 10 kills, six blocks, and six digs. Amber Bretwisch had a match-high of 31 assists. Kendal McCain collected 15 digs.  

AUM held the edge in kills (37-26), assists (34-23) and digs (58-36). UWA held the advantage in aces (9-7) and blocks (9-7).

UWA returns to the court Friday as the Tigers host West Florida in a Gulf South Conference match. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall.
