PREVIEWING THE WOLVES
Following a bye week, the Wolves of West Georgia, who started the year ranked in the top-25 in both the D2football.com and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) polls, are sitting at 2-2 and 1-1 after being doubled up by West Florida, 48-24, on Sept. 23 in Pensacola.
Ben Whitlock leads the Wolves with 498 passing yards on 34-of-68 with three TDs, but the story will be on the ground, as Rajaez Mosley's 79 rushing yards per game is good for the top in the GSC.
Terrill Cole, who caught five passes for 124 yards at Mississippi College on Sept. 16, leads the receiving game for West Georgia, while Xavier's 3.5 tackles for a loss and 25 tackles lead the defensive core.
WEST GEORGIA SERIES HISTORY
The Tigers and the Wolves will meet for the 40th time in series history, with the first meeting coming back in 1983, a 28-14 win for UWA.
UWG holds the 23-16 advantage in the all-time series.
However, the last 15 meetings have been as even as they can get, with UWA holding the advantage 8-7. During that stretch in Carrollton, the Tigers are 3-4, picking up wins in 2011, 2016 and the team's last matchup at University Stadium in 2021.
GOING FORWARD...
Saturday's evening matchup with the Tigers and the Wolves will be the last as Division II foes. West Georgia made the announcement earlier this season that they will begin the process of transitioning to Division I in the 2024-25 academic year.
UWG will join former GSC member North Alabama in the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN) for all sports except for football. Competing in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of Division I, the Wolves will play in the United Athletic Conference, which is a football-only conference that partners teams from the ASUN and the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The conference fields nine teams, and by 2025, it will be an 11-team conference with the addition of UWG (2024) and Texas Rio Grande Valley (2025).
NELSON: THE ALL-PURPOSE SPECIALIST
Dearrius Nelson has been one of UWA's top return men in 2023. Between his efforts on kickoff and punt returns, he has 264 yards between the two, second in the GSC and 38th in Division II.
Nelson is averaging 22.9 yards per kickoff return for 55th in the country, and on punt returns, he is averaging 5.8 yards per punt for 54th.
WEBB VS. MOSLEY
It'll be the battle of the top two running backs in the GSC on Saturday night: Rajaez Mosley of West Georgia and Bry Webb of West Alabama.
For Mosley, he is sixth in the nation with 6.87 rushing yards per carry. Leading the GSC in this category, he is also tops in the league with rushing yards per game with 79.0.
For Webb, he is second in rushing yards per carry (6.55) and per game (78.6), but he leads the league in rushing yards with 393.
