POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. – The University of West Alabama rodeo teams participated in the Three Rivers Rodeo showdown this past weekend, hosted by Three Rivers College.

Both teams took second place in the event. The women's team missed out on a third straight team victory with a score of 470 points, 15 behind team champion Pearl River Community College (PRCC).

"PRCC brought the heat. We did a lot of things right, but it wasn't enough. There are still many ladies on our team who haven't unlocked their potential. I'm hoping this break will give us time to bring some of those things to the surface.," said head coach Daniel Poole.

In the barrel racing, Taycie Matthews rolled to victory in the barrel racing with scores of 16.25 and 16.15, respectively. Jaylie Matthews was one step behind, posting round scores of 16.4 and 16.43 for second.

Ashley Henderson finished third in the breakaway roping, averaging 7.8 between her attempts.

It was a strong effort for the men's squad, posting a season-high score of 610 to achieve second place at the event.

"We are starting to compete like we are supposed to, and I believe our guys are now seeing what we are capable of doing," said Poole. I'm looking forward to spending the next few weeks honing our skills. We need to remain faithful in hard work and show confidence that the rest will take care of itself."

Cooper Cowan took the title in the team roping. Posting the win on the second go with a 6.1, his 13.5 average was good for the top spot overall with Dickson Lathan of Southern Arkansas.

Kota Wilhite placed second on the first go of the calf roping with a 10.9. Later, in the steer wrestling, he took second place with an average of 17.9 between the two attempts.

Clay Livengood and Kade Goemmer each shared third place in the team roping with identical averages of 20.4.

The Wranglers will return to the arena on Nov. 2-4 for the Southern Arkansas Rodeo Show in Magnolia, Arkansas.
