Back-to-Back Years on Top of GSC Standings, First Round of GSC Tournament is Set for Tuesday

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama men's basketball team defeated West Florida 74-66 in Gulf South Conference action to claim the GSC Regular Season Co-Championship title Saturday evening inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. This is the first time in program history to be back-to-back champions. 
 
 The Tigers improved to 23-5 overall and 19-5 in GSC play. The Argonauts dropped to 13-15 overall and are 9-15 in the conference. 
 
The Tigers return to Pruitt Hall on Tuesday to face Union in the first round of the GSC Championship Tournament. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
 
Kuran Garner led the Tigers with 18 points and grabbed three rebounds. Justin Allison posted 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Shardarrion Allen posted a double-double, scoring 3 points and had two rebounds. Terry Durham added 12 points.
 
Thaddeus Williams posted nine points and dished out eight assists. CJ Melton had five points and five rebounds. Peter Turay added two points. 
 
The Tigers shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the field, 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from beyond the arc, and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the free throw line. 
 
The Tigers were up 13-10 with 14:12 remaining in the first half. The Argos went on a 9-3 run to take the 19-16 lead at the 9:31 mark. Both teams went back and forth for the remainder of the first half, with the Tigers trailing 36-32 at the half.
 
The Tigers opened the second half with an 8-4 run to tie the game at 40-40 at the 18:20 mark. Over a five minute span, each team only scored two points. The Tigers went on an 11-4 run to take the lead at 53-47 with 8:27 remaining in the game. UWA stayed ahead the rest of the game to claim the 74-66 win.
 
LaTrell Tate led the Argos with 16 points and three rebounds.
