Tigers Defeat Union 84-73 to Advance to GSC Semifinals

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The No. 2 seed West Alabama men's basketball team advances to the semifinals in the 2023 Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament after defeating No. 7 seed Union 84-73 in the first round Tuesday evening inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. 
 
The Tigers improved to 24-5 overall. The Bulldogs ended their season with a 14-15 overall record. 
 
Justin Allison went 7-for-9 from the field, draining six threes, to lead the Tigers' offense with 21 points. He also grabbed four rebounds. Kuran Garner posted 19 points and six rebounds. Thaddeus Williams had 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Shardarrion Allen added 12 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists.

CJ Melton posted nine points, had three rebounds, and three assists. Terry Durham added seven points, four rebounds, and two steals. 

 
As a unit, UWA shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) from the field, 55 percent (11-of-20) from beyond the arc, and 73.1 percent (19-of-26) from the free throw line. 
 
The Tigers opened the game up with an 11-4 run, six points being two threes from Allison. Over five minutes, both teams went back and forth, but UWA remained ahead, 22-10, at the 11:49 mark. The Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run to trim the Tigers' lead to 24-20. UWA closed out the half with a 45-37 advantage over Union. 
 
Williams scored a free throw to start the second half. The Bulldogs then scored back-to-back buckets at the 18:45 mark. The Tigers responded with a 17-3 run to improve the lead to 63-45 with 10:48 remaining in the game. Union outscored UWA 15-9 with 2:39 remaining, but the Tigers held onto the lead to close out the game with an 84-73 win to advance to semifinals.  
 
Tylandrius Parks led the Bulldogs' offense with 41 points and 12 rebounds.
 
The Tigers take on the No. 3 seed Lee University on Saturday in the semifinals round of the GSC Championship Tournament. Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m. inside Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
