Tigers Defeat Lee and Advance to GSC Championship Game on Sunday

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The No. 2 seed West Alabama men's basketball team advances to the championship game in the 2023 Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament after defeating the No. 3 seed Lee University 78-73 in overtime in the semifinals round Saturday evening inside Pete Hanna Center.
 
The last time the Tigers made it to the championship game was the 2014-15 season. UWA takes on the No. 4 seed West Georgia on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
 
The Tigers improved to 25-5 overall, making this the most wins in program history. The Flames dropped to a 20-7 overall.
 
Kuran Garner led the Tigers with 20 points and five rebounds. Justin Allison posted a double-double, scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds. He also had six steals. Shardarrion Allen posted 16 points. 
 
Thaddeus Williams and Terry Durham each had nine points. Williams added six rebounds and dished out five assists. Durham had eight rebounds. CJ Melton posted seven points and had five rebounds. 
 
As a unit, UWA shot 38 percent (27-of-71) from the field, 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from beyond the arc, and 90 percent (18-of-20) from the free throw line. 
 
The Tigers trailed the whole game, but with 30 seconds left, Garner made a layup and drew a foul to bring the score to 61-60. Garner made the free throw to end the regulation game in a 61-61 tie. 
 
With 42 seconds left in overtime, Allison made a three-pointer to take the 74-71 lead. Allison and Garner each made two free throws to close the game with a 78-73 win. 
 
Beyuan Hendricks led the Flames with 18 points and nine rebounds.
