Tigers Handle Cougars to Win Season Opener

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The West Alabama baseball team started it's 2023 season with a dominant road win against Columbus State in the season opener. Two home runs and 13 hits led UWA to a win at Burger King Stadium.

West Alabama started strong and didn't look back, scoring seven in the second inning to Columbus State's one. The Tiger's offense was spread evenly with eight scorers and five in the second inning alone.

Josh Bower started the show for the Tigers with a double, followed by a double from Donovan Shows. Blake Vineyard brought Shows home before Colden Peeples doubled and brought Kyle Vogler and Blake Vineyard in.

Jake Nemith brought Peeples in with a single and Nemith was brought home with a double from Michael Rich. Win Johns walked home for the Cougars' first point to end the second inning scoring.

The third inning was all Columbus State as Isaac Bouton advanced home off an error before Colby Brabston advanced home later in the inning.

The Tigers opened up the scoring in the fourth inning with Rich's sacrifice fly leading to Vogler advancing home. Peeples later scored in the same inning before Vogler scored a home run in the fifth, bringing Vineyard and Shows home.

Derek Wylie scored off a Matthew McDade single for the Cougars in the sixth before Johns scored off a Connor Kirley error.

The pace would slow down, with the seventh and eighth inning seeing no scores until Nick Thibodeau hit a home run in the ninth.

Seth Nelson led Columbus State with two hits in four at-bats. Five other Cougars each finished with one hit.

West Alabama saw two pitchers take the mound, with Laney Keeton pitching 3.1 innings and Jacob Smith pitching 5.2 innings and securing the win. The duo saw nine combined strikeouts, three walks and six hits in 35 at-bats.

Columbus State fielded four pitchers with Johnny Dow absorbing the loss in his 1.2 innings pitched. Cole English carried the pitching load pitching four innings allowing two hits, one run and suffering an error to go along with his two strikeouts.

West Alabama will take on Columbus State again on Saturday at Burger King Stadium at 1 p.m.
