Errors Spoil Tigers Home Opener against Delta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. John Mitchell hit his first home run of the season, but the Tigers fell short 7-5 to Delta State at Tartt Field in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening. The Tigers committed costly errors throughout the game, allowing the Statesmen to capitalize.

Brendan McCauley ran home in the first inning, followed by Matt Corder and Brett Burrell advancing in to give Delta State an early 3-0 lead.

UWA (1-3) scored its first runs after a Mitchell single brought home Jake Nemith and Houston Kitterman brought Josh Bower in with a single to cut the lead down to 3-2.

The fifth inning saw six runs between the two teams. Delta State pushed three runs across the plate to start the inning.

The Tigers responded by scoring three runs in the fifth inning. The inning opened with a sacrifice fly from Bower, bringing Lane Domino across the plate. Nemith made it home before Mitchell hit his first home run of the season to bring the Tigers within one, down 6-5.

Brenton Thiels and Laney Keeton led the Tigers on the mound with three strikeouts each in their four combined innings pitched. Bryant Quimby (0-1) took his first pitching loss on the mound this season, allowing two hits, three runs, and collecting two strikeouts.

Duke Jordan (1-0) collected the pitching win for the Statesmen, forcing four strikeouts and allowing one hit and no runs.

The Tigers return to Tartt Field Friday to start their non-conference series with Miles College, with the first pitch thrown at noon.
