Baseball Wins GSC Series Against Mississippi College with Doubleheader Split

CLINTON, Miss. – The West Alabama baseball team split the doubleheader against Mississippi College to win the Gulf South Conference series with a 7-3 win in the first game and a 6-5 loss in the second.
 
West Alabama improved to 10-11 overall and 7-5 in the conference, while Mississippi College dropped to 7-15 overall and 3-6 in GSC play.
 
The Tigers combined for 21 hits across the doubleheader, with three home runs and two doubles.
 
Michael Rich led the Tigers bats across both games with three hits, two runs, one RBI, and a home run in game one. Kyle Vogler and Jake Nemith added in two hits each. Five other Tigers recorded one hit in the first game of the doubleheader.
 
Three pitchers took the mound for West Alabama in game one, with Jordan Felps (1-1) walking away with his first win of the season. In his two innings on the mound, Felps allowed no hits, no runs, and no walks while striking out one batter. Javian Stone pitched for five innings and allowed three hits, two runs, and two walks with two strikeouts, while Brenton Thiels allowed three hits and one run in innings of work.
 
In game two of the doubleheader, Rich hit another home run to go with two hits, two runs, and one RBI. Blake Vineyard and Houston Kitterman each had two hits on the game; Vineyard added two RBIs and one run scored with his double. Vogler's only hit in game two was a home run which added one RBI and one run to his totals. Bryce Newman and Nemith each had one hit in the game.
 
Jacob Smith (4-2) was the sole pitcher for the Tigers in game two and picked up his second loss of the season. In seven innings of work, Smith allowed seven hits, six runs, and two walks while suffering six errors and striking out 11 of 27 batters faced.
 
For Mississippi College, Catcher Rhett Birdsong led the bats in game one of the doubleheader with one hit, one run, and two runs batted in. Five other Choctaws recorded one hit on the game. Cole Drake led at the plate with one run, one hit, and two RBIs in game two, while six other players had one hit.
 
Kyle Collet (0-2) absorbed the loss for Mississippi College in game one, allowing no hits, one run, and one walk while having one error and striking out one batter in 1.2 innings on the mound. Alex McWhorter (1-1) got his first win of the season in game two by allowing only one hit, no runs, and no walks while striking out two batters in his two innings of work.
 
The Tigers return to Tartt Field on Friday in the first game of a GSC series against Lee. The first pitch of the single game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
