Baseball Travels to Birmingham to Take on Chargers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The West Alabama baseball team is hitting the road for its second non-conference game against Alabama Huntsville at Field 5 of the Hoover Met Complex on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
 
West Alabama sits at 13-12 on the season. Alabama Huntsville enters the contest at 14-13 overall.
 
The Tigers are led at the plate by Michael Rich who has .421 batting average, which ranks at fifth in the Gulf South Conference. Rich's 40 hits and eight home runs puts him at fourth and sixth in the conference, respectively. He's also 10th in the conference in doubles with eight. Jake Nemith leads the league in doubles with 10.
 
Blake Vineyard enters the week with a .333 batting average to go with 13 runs scored, 24 hits, four doubles, and nine runs batted in. In addition to his 10 doubles, Nemith is hitting .314 with 32 hits, 19 runs scored, and 17 RBIs in his 102 at-bats.
 
Outfielder Colden Peeples leads the Tigers in stolen bases with eight. Kyle Vogler has 22 hits, 25 runs scored, six doubles, and two home runs.
 
Jacob Smith (5-2) leads the Tigers' mound with a 2.64 ERA across 47.2 innings pitched. Smith has struck out 72 batters and held opposing batters to a .197 batting average. He remains among the conference leaders on the mound with rankings of seventh in ERA, third in opposing batting average, third in innings pitched, first in batters struck out, and second in wins.
 
Right-handed pitcher Brenton Thiels is among GSC leaders with three saves, good for second in the conference.
 
Landon Ezzell leads the Chargers' with a .433 batting average and 33 runs batted in. Outfielder Garrett Bodine has a batting average of .363 with 31 runs scored.
