MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The West Alabama baseball team is set to hit the road for a three-game Gulf South Conference series against Montevallo, beginning Friday at 5 p.m. and the first pitch of the Saturday doubleheader set for noon.
The Tigers enter the weekend series with a 13-13 overall record and 9-6 in GSC play. The Falcons are 22-4 and 10-2.
Tiger third baseman Michael Rich heads to Montevallo, Alabama with a batting average of .418 with 41 hits, 25 runs batted in, 25 runs scored, and a team-leading eight home runs. Rich's eight home runs is good for fifth in the GSC and he sits at fourth in batting average and total hits
Jake Nemith has 33 hits, 19 runs, 17 RBIs, and 10 doubles. Nemith sits at third in the conference in doubles with his 10. Blake Vineyard adds 24 hits and 12 runs with a .333 batting average.
Reigning GSC Pitcher of the Week Jacob Smith (5-2) leads the Tiger mound as well as the conference in batters struck out with 72. Smith has an ERA of 2.64 across 47.2 innings pitched and has held opposing batters to a .197 batting average. Smith ranks seventh in the GSC in ERA, third in opposing batting average, second in innings pitched, and third in wins.
Montevallo is led at the bats by Sam Kuchinski who has a .440 batting average to go with 37 hits and nine home runs. First baseman Ben Teel leads the GSC in runs batted in with 39 followed by Kuchinski's 38 RBIs in second place.
