Three Tigers Hit Home Runs to Split Doubleheader Against Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The West Alabama baseball team split its doubleheader against Montevallo to salvage a win from the Gulf South Conference series. The Falcons won game one of the doubleheader 10-6 and UWA won game two 8-4.
 
After the series, West Alabama sits at a 14-15 record overall with a 10-8 GSC record. Montevallo moves to 24-5 overall and 12-3 in conference play.
 
Across both games of the doubleheader, the Tigers combined for 19 hits, 14 runs, and four home runs.
 
Kyle Vogler led the West Alabama bats in game one, finishing with two runs scored and two hits in five at-bats. Nick Thibodeau and Ryan Fletcher each had two hits and one run in four plate appearances. Thibodeau and third baseman Michael Rich finished with one double each in the game.
 
Blake Vineyard's only hit of the game came off a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning which brought Vogler and himself home.
 
UWA had seven pitchers take the mound in game one with Brenton Thiels (1-3) absorbing the loss. Thiels pitched for 2.2 innings and allowed three hits, three runs, and one walked batter while striking out three of the 12 batters faced.
 
Colden Peeples, Houston Kitterman, and Bryce Newman led the Tiger bats in game two with each of them hitting a home run. Peeples finished with two hits, one run, and four runs batted in, and Kitterman had two runs with two hits and three RBIs in two at-bats. Newman contributed one hit, one run, and one RBI.
Vineyard had two hits and one run in the game, while Jake Nemith added one run and one hit.
 
Jacob Smith (6-2) picked up the win for the Tigers, allowing only seven hits, four runs, and five walks while striking out six of the 30 batters faced across 125 pitches thrown in 6.1 innings on the mound. Gates Pee came in to relief pitch for 0.2 innings and allowed no runs, hits, or walks against three batters.
 
The Falcons were led at the plate by first baseman Ben Teel in game one of the doubleheader, finishing with two runs scored, three hits, and one double. Luke Mitchell led Montevallo in game two with two hits and one RBI.
 
JJ Pease (5-0) got the win in game one, working 5.2 innings and allowed eight hits, five runs, and one walk while striking out three of 27 batters faced. Relief pitcher Connor Phelan picked up his third save of the season, pitching for one inning and allowing no hits, runs, or walks while striking out one batter. Phelan (2-1) was attributed with the loss in game two, pitching for 0.2 innings and allowing two hits, four runs, and one walk.
 
The Tigers make their return to Tartt Field with a non-conference single game against Miles set for Wednesday. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
