Tigers Rally in Game One to Set Up Doubleheader Split Against Shorter

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama baseball team found momentum late in game one of a doubleheader against Shorter, winning 4-3 before dropping the second game 6-4.
 
West Alabama enters game three of the Gulf South Conference series against Shorter with a 15-16 record overall and an 11-9 conference record. Shorter sits at 16-16 overall and 9-11 in GSC play.
 
The Tigers combined for 18 hits, eight runs, and two home runs in the doubleheader.
 
In game one, the West Alabama bats were led by Blake Vineyard who finished with one run and two hits in three at-bats. Right fielder Nick Thibodeau had one run and two hits, both being doubles, as well in four plate appearances.
 
Ryan Fletcher contributed two hits and two runs batted in, while center fielder Colden Peeples had two hits. Three other Tigers finished with one hit, with Michael Rich's sole hit coming from a timely home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
 
Relief pitcher Jackson Wynn (1-1) picked up his first pitching win of the season, pitching three innings and allowing only two hits, no runs, and no walks while striking out one batter. Bryant Quimby started on the mound for the Tigers and allowed eight hits, three runs, and two walks while striking out two batters.
 
Bryce Newman hit a home run in game two of the doubleheader to lead West Alabama's bats, adding one more hit, one run, and two runs batted in. Peeples finished with two hits, Vineyard and Josh Bower each had one hit, while Thibodeau added one hit and one run scored.
 
Jordan Felps (1-3) was charged with the loss in game two, working for 4.1 innings and allowing five runs, five hits, and two walks. The Tigers had three other pitchers take the mound in relief.
 
Shorter was led at the plate by first baseman Justin Barnes in game one, contributing three hits, one double, and one run batted in. Four other Hawks finished with two hits in the game one loss. Barnes led the Hawks in hits in the second game of the doubleheader with two hits and one RBI. Four other Shorter batters contributed one hit each.
 
Trevor Nanney (1-2) picked up his second pitching loss of the season in game one, allowing two hits, one run, and one walk in 0.1 innings on the mound. Carson Cook (2-0) got the win in game two, pitching for 4.2 innings and allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out three batters. Ethan Hawthorne picked up his first save of the season by allowing no runs, no hits, and no walks in 1.1 innings of work.
 
West Alabama and Shorter finish out the conference series in a single game on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
