Tigers Sweep Doubleheader to Win Series Against CBU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama baseball team combined for 17 runs on 26 hits on the way to a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep over Christian Brothers Saturday on Tartt Field. The Buccaneers won the opener 7-3.
 
West Alabama improved to 8-9 overall and 5-4 in GSC action, while CBU drops to 8-11 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
 
Of the Tigers 26 hits, six were for extra bases as West Alabama had five doubles, one triple, and one home run in the doubleheader.
 
UWA pitchers allowed only four runs, 14 hits, and five walks all while striking out 10 batters.
 
Blake Vineyard had four hits in four at-bats along with two runs and two RBIs in the first game to accompany his home run. Michael Rich and Bryce Newman contributed three hits and one run each. Four other Tigers added two hits each as well in the 12-2 win in game one.
 
In game two of the doubleheader, Ryan Fletcher and Colden Peeples led the Tigers with two hits each. Jake Nemith, Kyle Vogler, Newman, and Rich each added in one hit for the Tigers.
 
Jacob Smith (4-1) picked up the win on the mound for West Alabama in game one by striking out seven batters and allowing only eight hits, two runs, and two walks across eight innings pitched.
 
Brenton Thiels (1-0) picked up his first pitching win in game two by allowing only five hits, two runs, and four walks while striking out two batters. Javian Stone recorded his first save of the season by coming in to pitch three innings and allowing only one hit and walking one batter while giving up no runs.
 
For the Buccaneers, Ben Brocato and Matthew McDaniel led the bats in game one with two hits each. CBU had four other batters record one hit in the game. Jarret Fowlkes recorded three hits in three at-bats in game two to go along with one run.
 
Travis Cole (0-3) and Charlie Faoro (2-2) absorbed losses for Christian Brothers. Cole pitched for 2.2 innings and allowed seven hits and four runs while suffering three errors. Faoro worked 4.2 innings in the second game, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out three.
