Tigers Secured GSC Tournament Championship Title After Defeating UWG 67-65

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - West Alabama men's basketball team secured the 2023 Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship title by defeating the No. 4 seed West Georgia Sunday evening inside Pete Hanna Center. 
 
The last time the Tigers won the GSC Tournament was in 1982-83. With the win, the Tigers will get an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. The NCAA Selection Show will air tonight at 10 p.m. CT on NCAA.com. 
 
The Tigers improved their record to 26-5 overall, making this the most wins in program history. 
 
Justin Allison was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, and Kuran Garner was named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
Allison led the Tigers with 18 points and three rebounds. Thaddeus Williams and Terry Durham each posted 14 points. CJ Melton posted a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Shardarrion Allen had six points and six assists. Kuran Garner had five points and five rebounds. 
 
There were three lead changes, and the score was tied four times. The Tigers held a 32-27 lead at the half.
 
Allison started the second half with two free throws. In the 18th minute, Durham scored back-to-back layups to extend the lead to 39-29. UWG went on an 11-2 run to trim the Tigers' lead to 44-42.
 
With 3:52 remaining in the game, Allison made two free throws, and Melton made a three to extend the lead to 63-57. The Wolves scored six points with 1:53 left in the game. With four seconds left, Allen went up for a jumper and got fouled under the basket. Allen made his last two free throws, and UWA held onto the lead to secure the 67-65 win, crowning the Tigers the 2023 GSC Tournament Champions. 
 
Zawdie Jackson led the Wolves with 19 points and three rebounds.
