LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team took down the University of Alabama in Huntsville in overtime 67-65, in a thrilling win for the Tigers Saturday afternoon inside Pruitt Hall.
UWA ends its four-game losing skid with the victory and improve to 5-14 and 4-11 in the Gulf South Conference (GSC). UAH drops to 7-11 and 6-9.
"We gutted it out today. We got down a time and two. Different people did it for us. The last two games, we have grown up; I think we're a competitive ball club," said head coach
Rusty Cram.
Both teams traded blows in the first quarter. Tied at seven, UWA saw a second-chance opportunity from
Kaedre Denson to put the good guys back on top, 9-7.
On the other end, the Chargers responded with a quick 7-0 run to push the lead ahead of a single possession for the first time in the game. A Haelim Adle layup made it a 14-9 affair with 1:36 to go.
Shayla Golden did cut the deficit back to three points with a layup, 14-11, which would be the score after a quarter of play.
Overcoming a five-point deficit two minutes into the second stanza, the Tigers erased that with a 6-0 run. After
Aliyah Dade started the run,
Julia Rodriguez scored on back-to-back possessions to reclaim the lead 21-20.
The Charger defense immediately extinguished the spark, not allowing the Tigers to convert from the field in five minutes. Still, the deficit was manageable, as Rodriguez ended the drought to make it a 28-25 UAH lead.
Alabama Huntsville had a second-chance layup to go back up by five points, 30-25, with 30 seconds remaining, but
Maryanne Logsdon's shot from downtown made it a 30-28 affair at the halftime horn.
UAH got out strong in the third quarter with six straight points to swell the lead to eight, improving the largest deficit on either side. After a Logsdon steal on defense, the offense went to work, starting at the charity stripe as
Kamille Clark and Logsdon knocked down a pair.
Logsdon's connections at the line helped erase the eight-point deficit, as the Tigers went on a 13-1 run to flip the scoreboard back in favor of the home team. Logsdon evened the game with a layup, and after a missed 3-pointer on the other end, Rodriguez scored on a jump shot to reclaim the lead, 40-38.
Dade made it a four-point game, 43-39, with a shot from downtown. Meanwhile, the defense stood tall for the Tigers, holding the opposition without a field goal for 6:48 of the final 6:50 of the third period. UAH ended the drought by Madie Krieger at the horn to make it a 43-42 UWA lead after 30 minutes.
The fourth quarter was all about possession, as neither team had more than a two-point lead for the entire duration. Down 53-52 with 1:52 to go, Rodriguez cleaned up on a second chance opportunity.
Sydney Schwallie dished to Rodriguez with the jumper to give the Tigers the 54-53 lead with 1:11 to go.
With 17 seconds remaining, and the Chargers with the ball, the Tigers were attributed with a foul that sent the visitors to the line for two shots. A deep breath was exhaled in Pruitt Hall when Bella White missed the first free throw. Unfortunately for the home crowd, she connected on the second to tie the game at 54.
After moving the ball to the front court, Rodriguez tried for the game-winner, but it fell short and the game went to overtime.
Everything was going right for the Chargers in the overtime period, going up four, 64-60, with 40 seconds left. However, the home standing Tigers did not give up. Rodriguez went 1-of-2 at the line to make it a one-possession game, 64-61, with 25 seconds remaining.
On the other end, UWA was forced to foul. Haley Nichols did make it a two-possession game with her one free throw in two attempts, 65-61.
On the ensuing inbound, UWA saw a clutch triple from the right wing by Logsdon from Rodriguez to make it a one-point game, with 14 seconds remaining.
The Tiger defense stayed strong, needing a turnover to get the ball back down by one point. Well, they got it as the inbound pass by UAH was halted after stepping on the boundary line trying to get the ball in.
The energy moved to the UWA bench, as
Julia Rodriguez converted a clutch jump shot to erase what was a four-point, two-possession lead for UAH that became a 66-65 UWA lead.
The Chargers recorded a second straight turnover with a travel call with 1.7 remaining. After Logsdon made it a 67-65 lead at the charity stripe, the Chargers had to go the length of the floor, but the home run pass was stolen by Rodriguez to run the clock out.
What kept the Tigers in the game was seeing the Chargers miss free throw shots. UAH missed nine shots at the charity stripe, including two in the fourth quarter that could have swung in the right direction for the visitors.
Between the two, there were six ties and 19 lead changes.
The Tigers improved to 26-10 against the Chargers at home, winning the last four inside Pruitt Hall. In the 76th meeting between the two schools on Saturday, UWA is now 40-36.
Julia Rodriguez matched a new career-high with eight field goals in 14 attempts and totaled 18 points.
Maryanne Logsdon also recorded 18 points and added three dimes and two thefts. In the second half and overtime, the senior scored 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting and two clutch shots from downtown in the extra period.

Sydney Schwallie matched a season high for the third time this season with five assists.
Leading UAH was Bellah Machen with 15 points on 6-of-10 from the floor. Haley Nichols dropped a double-double off the bench with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Tigers continue the three-game home stand on Thursday against Lee for a 5:30 p.m. tip inside Pruitt Hall.
