LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Volleyball team fell, 3-1, to the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks on Friday afternoon.
West Alabama (2-21, 0-13 GSC) turned in one of their best offensive nights of the season, putting down 54 kills on a .237 hitting percentage, but struggled to contain AUM (6-15, 3-9 GSC), who accumulated 53 kills on a .285 hitting percentage, which led to their four-set loss.
The first set was all Auburn Montgomery to begin as a kill from Savannah Sebek gave the Warhawks a 10-6 lead. After a slow start, West Alabama began to play themselves into the game as service aces from Taylor Lamontagne and Maggie Roddam cut the Tigers deficit to two halfway through the set. From there on out AUM's Maya Thompson and Sebek took over the game and closed out West Alabama by combining for five kills over the 10 rallies, leading the Warhawks to a 25-20 set win.
In the second set, UWA came out the gates fast as back-to-back blocks from Gracie Pierscinski and a kill from Peyton Quesnel gave the Tigers a 10-4 lead early. Facing their largest point deficit of the day, AUM quickly responded, using a 7-1 run to tie the game at 11 before the two teams traded points deep into the set. With the score tied at 17, the Warhawks' Kendall McCain swung the momentum in favor of Auburn Montgomery with an ace that sparked a 9-2 run for AUM, winning them the set, 25-19.
With their backs against the wall, West Alabama put together their most complete set in the third. KB Kinney got things started with a kill that ignited a 15-7 UWA run, giving the Tigers a six-point advantage at the midway point. Another kill from Kinney and a pair from Jaida Alvin and Quesnel pushed West Alabama's lead out to 18-10 before AUM made a late push to make the game interesting. Down eight, the Warhawks went on a 12-6 run, putting the score at 24-23 in favor of UWA until Quesnel put an end to Auburn Montgomery's comeback efforts with another kill.
The fourth set was highly competitive with neither team able to take a lead by more than five points. Quesnel continued her career-day into the fourth along with Pierscinski and Makenzie Widmer who combined for five kills in the set, but it wasn't enough to overcome AUM's duo of Sebek and Thompson as the pair led the Warhawks to a 25-22 set win to clinch the match.
Quesnel finished with a career-high 15 kills, a career-high five blocks, and a career-high 17.5 points while Alvin added 10 kills and 11 digs. Defensively, Pierscinki recorded eight blocks which ties her career-high.
West Alabama will be back in action on Tuesday when they play host to Alabama Huntsville for a 6:00 p.m. showdown in Pruitt Hall.
