Tigers Dominate Hawks for Homecoming Weekend Victory

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Football secured their sixth win of the season on Saturday, defeating the Chowan Hawks, 38-0, at Tiger Stadium on Homecoming Weekend.

No.18 UWA (6-1, 3-1 GSC) dominated Chowan (2-5, 1-3 GSC) on Saturday, holding the Hawks to a season-low 187 yards of total offense, which propelled the Tigers to their second shutout of the season.

"Anytime you get a shutout, that's a great feeling and we were able to get one today," said head coach Brett Gilliland. "Homecoming is a big deal around here and our job on Homecoming is to win the game and these guys locked in this week and focused on that."

The West Alabama offense started off a little sluggish in the first quarter, only able to score three points on three drives. The Tigers' defense carried the load, holding Chowan to 68 total yards while turning them over once, as Issac Williams recorded his third interception of the season to end the quarter.

UWA's offense found their rhythm in the second quarter as Spencer Arceneaux and company put together their best drive of the game to begin. The Tigers drove 75-yards down the field on 14 plays before Arceneaux connected with Tyler Walker for a six-yard touchdown to put West Alabama ahead 10-0. After the touchdown, UWA's defense continued to dominant as they forced back-to-back Chowan three-and-outs before Travon Nunn blocked the Hawks' punt which was recovered in the endzone by Lake Gurley for a West Alabama touchdown. Gurley's recovery for a touchdown was the final score of the half as the Tigers went into the locker ahead 17-0.

West Alabama held Chowan to 109 yards and five first downs in the half, while forcing two turnovers with Jamari Jemison joined Williams in the Interception category.

It was more UWA domination in the third quarter as the Tigers marched right down the field on their opening drive. After picking up 48 yards in seven plays, Arceneaux and Walker connected for their second touchdown of the game to extend West Alabama's lead to 24-0. The Hawks offense couldn't find any answers, giving the Tigers a chance to put the game even further out of reach, in which they did. Bry Webb capped off a 71-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run, extending UWA's lead to 31 at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth, Coach Gilliland emptied his bench, with a multitude of players garnering playing time. Running back Tyler Smith took full advantage of his touches as the senior broke off a 38-yard touchdown run to secure his first touchdown of the year. A few drives later, Aydan Adams secured his first career interception to put a stamp on a dominant 38-0 win for UWA.

"I thought we played really good team football in that second half," Gilliland stated. "Every week we learn from our mistakes and we push on Sunday as learning Sunday. We have to continue to find the mistakes and the areas we can grow, and we have to continue to make strides in our progression."

West Alabama will be back at home next Saturday when they welcome the North Greenville Trailblazers for a 2:00 p.m. matchup on Hall of Fame Weekend.
