LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Volleyball team fell, 3-0, to the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans on Friday night.
UWA (1-13, 0-4 GSC) struggled to contain a Trevecca Nazarene (7-9, 4-1 GSC) offense that caught fire early. The Trojans put down 36 kills on a .302 hitting percentage in the match, propelling them to their 3-0 sweep.
The Tigers couldn't find their rhythm in the first set, accumulating more attack errors than kills. West Alabama could only muster up six kills in the set while Trevecca Nazarene recorded 13 kills, leading to the Trojans running away with the set, 25-11.
The second set was arguably the most competitive and compelling of the season for UWA as marched out to a 9-4 lead after a 5-0 run, carried by Peyton Quesnel and KB Kinney. Trevecca Nazarene quickly responded as the Trojans used a 10-3 run to take a 14-12 lead. The seesaw battle continued as West Alabama retook the lead after a kill from Makenzie Widmer sparked a 9-4 Tigers run, putting UWA ahead 23-21. From there on out, West Alabama had set point twice before Trevecca Nazarene rattled off three straight points to win the set, 28-26.
A set away from their fourth conference win, the Trojans took a quick 10-4 lead in the third. Trevecca Nazarene continued to pour it on, taking their largest lead of the set at 17-8 before West Alabama began to battle back and make their way into the set. A kill from Kinney started a 10-5 UWA run but Jaida Alvin carried the run as the sophomore scored four of those points, cutting the Tigers deficit to three late in the game. From that moment on, the Trojans re-found their composure and put the match away, taking set three, 25-22.
Jaida Alvin led UWA with a match-high 13 kills on a .216 hitting percentage while Taylor Lamontagne recorded a career-high 30 assists.
West Alabama will be back in action on Tuesday when they welcome Lee to Pruitt Hall for a 5:00 PM GSC matchup.
