LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Volleyball team fell, 3-1, to the Lee Flames in GSC play on Friday night.
UWA (2-23, 0-15 GSC) couldn't overcome a career night from Lee's (16-12, 10-6 GSC) Payton Danley who recorded a career-high 25 kills on a career-high .579 hitting percentage, leading the Flames to their four-set win.
In the 2024 season, the Tigers have started out matches a little slow but that wasn't the case on Friday. West Alabama jumped out to a 10-8 lead to begin after a kill from Makenzie Widmer. Kills from KB Kinney and Jaida Alvin kept the Tigers ahead before an attack error from Peyton Quesnel began a 4-0 run for the Flames, giving Lee a 15-14 lead. Once they captured the lead, the Flames committed six errors, propelling UWA to set point at 24-22 until Quesnel won the set for West Alabama with a kill.
Reeling off their momentum that they captured in the first set, the Tigers marched out to a 10-5 lead in set number two. Lee found their rhythm and countered with a 5-0 run to tie the set at 10. The two teams then traded points until Lee used an 8-1 run to take a commanding 19-14 lead late. A pair of service errors from the Flames and a kill from Alvin kept West Alabama in the set momentarily before Danley erupted for three straight kills to clinch the game, 25-17, for Lee.
The third set was eerily similar to the second as UWA raced out to a 10-6 lead to start. A service error from the Tigers swung the momentum back in favor of the Flames as Lee took an 18-14 lead after a 12-4 run. A pair of errors from the Flames halted their momentum as West Alabama cut their lead down to one before attack errors hurt the Tigers late, leading to a 25-21 set win for Lee.
UWA fell behind early in the fourth set and couldn't keep up with the Flames' offense that had caught fire. A service ace from Lee's Izzy Denton gave the Flames a 10-6 advantage until their lead expanded to seven thanks to a 5-1 that was carried by Danley. Kills from Gracie Pierscinski and Quesnel kept the Tigers in the set but they couldn't overcome their slow start and went on to drop the fourth, 25-16.
Quesnel recorded a team-high 10 kills on a .304 hitting percentage while Roddam picked up 18 digs.
West Alabama will conclude their Tennessee road trip on Saturday when they visit Nashville, TN for a 1:00 PM matchup with Trevecca Nazarene.
