LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team defeated Christian Brothers University 62-53, in a Gulf South Conference contest Thursday evening from Pruitt Hall.
West Alabama stopped a five-game losing skid and improve to 6-19 and 5-16 in the league. Christian Brothers dropped to 2-23 and 2-19.
Following the victory, the Tigers honored their three seniors:
Kamille Clark,
Aliyah Dade and
Maryanne Logsdon.
West Alabama wasted no time getting the offense going. After each team traded buckets in the first 90 seconds of the game, the Tigers kept the Lady Buccaneers off the scoreboard for nearly seven minutes. During the run, UWA knocked down 13 straight points.
In the period, the Tigers converted 5-of-17 from the field, but more importantly, the Tigers had eight second chance points thanks to six offensive rebounds. Speaking of boards, UWA crashed them in the period, corralling 19 to CBU's eight.
CBU restored order in the final minute of the first quarter to cut the deficit to 15-8, and they used that momentum in the second stanza. The Lady Bucs dropped 19 in the quarter and used eight fast break points to cut what was a 13-point Tiger lead an even 27-27 score at the break.
Tied at 31 in the third quarter with under six minutes in the quarter, UWA went on a quick 7-0 run to restore order before CBU burned a timeout with four minutes remaining.
The Tigers didn't let up after the break, holding the Lady Buccaneers to another long scoring drought. The defense held CBU to no points in the final 6:53 of the period as UWA swelled the lead to its biggest of the night at 14, 45-31, at the end of the third quarter.
West Alabama went on an 18-4 run in the quarter, scoring 7-of-13 from the floor and had six assists off its seven shots.
The game of runs swung back in the favor of Christian Brothers, dropping the deficit back to a one-point game with 3:02 left in the ball game, but a
Kendall Lacoste triple and
Aliyah Dade driving layup was the deciding factor for UWA in the victory.
Four Tigers finished in double figures on Thursday night, led by
Kendall Lacoste's 13 points on 4-of-11 from the field and three connections from long distance. The freshman also added a career-best six rebounds.
Julia Rodriguez added 12 points, while
Kamille Clark connected on 4-of-9 from the floor for 11 points.
Shayla Golden posted 11 points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.
Destiny Kiner led CBU with a double-double, 19 points and 11 rebounds.
The regular season home finale for West Alabama will take place on Saturday against Union University. Tip is slated for 2 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall.
