MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama rodeo teams are getting to the home stretch of the 2024 season with the Tennessee Martin Rodeo Showdown over the weekend from the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
The women took the top spot for the fifth show out of eight events to date with 530 points.
The men's team took sliver in an event for just the second time this season, the first since the Three Rivers Rodeo Showdown on Oct. 5-7.
Entering the weekend, the men are ranked second in the Ozark Region with 2,805 points. The women are out in front by nearly 1,000 points with a team score of 2,525.
WOMEN'S RECAP
Lauren Booty won the second go in the breakaway roping with a 2.2 score after finishing fifth with a 3.3 on the first go. Averaging 5.5 between the two rounds, she won the 60 points for the event.
In the goat tying, she finished third with a 13.8 average after scoring 6.7 for second place in the second go.
Jaylie Matthews used her first go of 13.75 to pick up the blue ribbon in the barrel racing. After finishing third on the second attempt with 14.05, her 27.8 average was the lowest among others in the field.
Joanna Hammett earned the top spot in the goat tying with a 15 average. In a crowded field for the event, the junior tied for first place on the second go with a 6.3 score.
As a team, the women scored 530 points on the weekend, beating out the hosts by 180 points.
MEN'S RECAP
Cooper Cowan shared teh win with Dickson Latham in the team roping, with each playing averaging 15 between the two attempts.
Gavin Lee took third place in steer wrestling with a 15.7 average after taking the No. 1 spot on the first go with a 5.7.
Blayne Saine won on the first go in calf roping (9.9), while
Cade Smith's first go of 6.3 was good for the top in the steer wrestling.
Despite Missouri Valley College running away with the show, West Alabama picked up 395 points, finishing 95 points ahead of Northwest Mississippi Community College.
With two shows left in the regular season, the Tigers will next head to Monticello, Arkansas for the next show hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello next week.
