Fast Start Not Enough in Baseball's Series Finale Versus Chargers

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team dropped the series finale to the University of Alabama in Huntsville, 13-5, Saturday from Tartt Field.

UAH takes the three-game series from UWA and improve to 21-22 and 9-18 in the Gulf South Conference. The Tigers fall to 19-24 and 11-16.

Things were looking up for the Tigers with a 10 a.m. first pitch. After a three-up, three-down inning by starter Roe Ketchum, the offense quickly went to work. After Bryce Newman started the frame with a single, Houston Kitterman followed with an RBI double to get the home team on the board first.

Two batters later Ryan Fletcher poked a single to score two runs and a Cade Horton RBI double made it a 4-0 lead after an inning of play.

Unfortunately, the score did not last long, as Brock Butler immediately got the Chargers on the board in the top of the second with a lead off solo shot.

Later in the inning, UAH took advantage of a couple of miscues by the UWA defense and scored its second run on an RBI single by Hugh Windle. Ian Raegan, who was hit by a pitch and later scored on the single by Windle, got to third on two errors.

Alabama Huntsville took the lead for good in the fourth after scoring four times in the frame, capped by a three-run homer by Merik Carter to give the Chargers their first lead of the day, 6-4.

The visitors put the game away with five more runs in the seventh and two in the ninth. UWA did tack on a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double by Kitterman.

After the Tigers scored four runs on four hits in the first, Jacob Peters and Tanner Giles settled in for the Chargers on the mound. From the second through the fourth, UWA only had the minimum faced in each of those innings.

Cade Horton posted his 10th multi-hit game of the year with a 2-for-3 performance. Houston Kitterman added two hits of his own for his 12th multi-hit game with two RBIs.

Ryan Fletcher had two hits and RBIs each on the afternoon.

Hunter Tillman went 3-for-5 in the lineup to lead UAH, while Caleb Mahan and Merik Carter each had three RBIs.

West Alabama will wrap up the home schedule with a midweek contest against Spring Hill. First pitch is set for Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. from Tartt Field.
