Baseball Shuts Out Spring Hill to Conclude Home Schedule

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team routed Spring Hill College by a 9-0 score to wrap up the home schedule, Tuesday afternoon from Tartt Field.

UWA earned its 20th win of the season and improve to 20-24 overall. SHC dropped to 27-19.

After a couple of quick innings, the Tigers got to work in the bottom of the third. After the Badgers went to the bullpen, Albert Hernandez welcomed him into the game with a lead off home run to start the scoring.

From there, the wheels fell off for Spring Hill. After back-to-back hits by Will Wood and Bryce Newman to put runners on first and second, a couple of muffed throws by Parker Serio at first base saw Wood score the second run in the inning.

Three batters later, Brayden Pelkey posted an infield hit to third to score Newman. Nick Thibodeau followed with an RBI knock to make it a 4-0 lead.

Pelkey later scored on a Ryan Fletcher bloop hit for the 5-0 advantage.

The Badgers committed their third error of the inning that saw the sixth run come across for the Tigers. With runners on the corners, Fletcher moved up to second on a stolen base. Izzy Carrera behind the plate instead threw to third to keep Thibodeau close to the bag, but the throw went down the left field line instead and that allowed Thibodeau to touch home plate.

In the fifth, two more runs scored on a Hernandez double to the left center field gap.

In the sixth, Sam Smith touched home after a miscue by Jackson Kent during Chase Dejean's at bat. As Carrera threw back to Kent, he misfielded the ball on the mound, and it got away long enough to see Smith score and swell the lead to 9-0.

It was a banner day for the UWA bullpen in the midweek, allowing five hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. From the fifth inning on, the Tigers retired the final 15 of 18 batters faced.

Graham Holland punched out five batters in four innings. Jackson Wynn (2-2) picked up the win after a 1-2-3 fifth.

Albert Hernandez posted a 2-for-4 day at the dish with a home run and a double with three RBIS.

Bryce Newman also added three hits.

West Alabama will wrap up the regular season with a trip to Shorter and a spot for the GSC Championship as it comes down to the final weekend. First pitch of the series starts on Friday at 11 a.m. CDT from Rome, Georgia.
