Football Continues Homestand with Saturday Night Battle Against Saints

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Winners of their first two games of the 2024 season, the University of West Alabama Football team will attempt to sweep their three-game homestand on Saturday as they play host to the Limestone Saints at 6:00 p.m.

West Alabama will also be honoring all Military members in their annual Military Appreciation Game. One Free Admission will be given to anyone who has a valid Military ID card.

West Alabama (2-0, 0-0 GSC) enters Saturday's matchup after a dominating 45-9 win over the Tusculum Pioneers last weekend. As for Limestone, they come to Livingston after a 48-13 blowout victory over West Liberty on the road.

"We are looking forward to our third straight home game," said head coach Brett Gilliland. "Limestone is a very quality opponent, coming off back-to-back playoff appearances. They have done a great job as a program and it will take a great effort from us to have success."

Quarterback Spencer Arceneaux was thrown into the fire in Week One after, starter, Kason Lincke suffered an injury in the third quarter. Arceneaux didn't put up gawdy numbers in the Tigers' Week One battle against Miles but helped propel UWA over the Golden Bears, 16-15. Week Two was a completely didn't story as the Junior gun slinger played a massive role in West Alabama's 36-point win over the Pioneers. Arceneaux beat Tusculum with his arm and his legs as he accounted for 323 total yards and three total touchdowns, making a strong for a GSC Player of the Week selection that ultimately went to Delta State's Cole Kirk.

With Arceneaux under center, he is surrounded by talent, beginning with a pair of receivers in Tyler Walker and Khris Binion. Walker currently leads the Tigers in receiving yards with 145 on five catches with 109 of those yards coming against Tusculum last week. As for Binion, he's the team leader in catches, with eight, and ranks behind Walker in receiving yards with 137.

On the ground, West Alabama possesses a three-headed monster in Bry Webb, Brayden Jenkins, and Tyler Smith. Webb leads the backfield with a team-high 109 rushing yards while Jenkins and Smith have combined for 109 through two weeks, putting the trio at a combined 218 rushing yards heading into this weekend.

Defensively for UWA, the Tigers have a strong front seven, led by Linebacker Ishmael Naylor and Defensive Tackle, Travorus Hatcher. Naylor currently leads the team with 17 total tackles, while Hatcher has been disruptive in the middle, registering a team-high 2.5 tackles for loss. In the secondary for West Alabama, Devonte Harris and Uriah Ratliff have both caught interceptions through the first two games, while Issac Williams leads the DB room with 11 tackles.

Dustin Noller leads a Limestone offense that scored six offensive touchdowns in the Saints 35-point win over West Liberty in their season opener last Thursday. In their win, Noller threw for 292 yards and four touchdowns. The Quarterback is in his final season of eligibility, playing all of his career at West Liberty. Noller has undeniable arm talent but early in his career, the signal caller struggled with turnovers. As he continued to gain more and more experience, the turnover issues vanished and after throwing for nearly 3,000 yards on top of 31 touchdowns, Noller is now a proven elite level Division II quarterback.

In Limestone's offensive backfield, sophomore Kevin Lalin is the lead back. After rushing for 220 yards on 41 carries in 2023, Lalin exploded for 123 yards and two touchdowns last Thursday, proving he's ready for a larger role in the new campaign.

Last season, the Saints were inconsistent on the defensive side of the ball as their 2023 title run came to an end, after surrendering 62 points to Valdosta State in the first round of the playoffs.

Putting 2023 in their rear view mirror, the Limestone defense got off to a fast start in the 2024 season, holding West Liberty to 13 points while forcing three turnovers. Luke Janack is a force in the middle of Limestone's defense as the Linebacker recorded a team-high 11 tackles and 1.0 tackles for loss last Thursday. In the secondary, Jeremiah Lomax, Camyen Feagins, and Dashawn Gamble all caught interceptions in Week One and will provide a nice test for Arceneaux and the West Alabama offense.

Kickoff for Saturday's matchup between the Tigers and the Saints is set for 6:00 p.m.
