Livingston, AL - UWA head football coach
Brett Gilliland is facing a double-dose of the "unknown" here Saturday when the Tigers host Tusculum University.
This is the first game of the year for the Pioneers, who finished 6-5 in 2023 so UWA does not have any film on Tusculum. They also have a whole new coaching staff .
"Their head coach, Billy Taylor, has been a defensive coordinator at D-1 East Tennessee State for many years, " said Gilliland. "Their offensive coordinator came from Wofford and we expect to see a lot of option plays on offense. We will have to adapt as we go."
The Tigers are fresh off a 16-15 win over Miles College on a 20-yard field goal by
Elijah Guyton (Cullman) on the last play of the game. He also added two other field goals and was named
Gulf South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.
UWA starting quarterback
Kason Lincke (Mobile) was hurt in the third quarter and his status is unknown for Saturday.
Back-up quarterback
Spencer Arceneaux (Mobile) led the team on a 17-play, 72-yard drive in the final 4:27 of the game to win the contest.
"We overcame true adversity last week," added Gilliland. "We faced something we can't duplicate in practice. We learned how this team can respond. I was very proud of them. "
Bry Webb (Dothan) led the Tigers with 70 yards on the ground. Lincke and Arceneaux combined for 133 yards passing. Gilliland also noted the running of
Tyler Smith (Tuscaloosa) on the last drive.
