LAKELAND, Fla. – West Alabama men's soccer fought to a 1-1 draw against Florida Southern on Sunday afternoon at the Barnett Athletic Complex.
Both teams remain unbeaten after a hard-fought contest that saw goals in the first half but a scoreless second.
Florida Southern struck first in the 19th minute when a miscommunication in West Alabama's defense allowed Darcy Moffat to intercept an attempted header back to the keeper, converting it into his third goal of the season.
The Tigers responded in the 35th minute, as
David Nunez netted his second goal of the season off a cross from
Michael Bell. The Florida Southern goalkeeper mishandled Bell's delivery, allowing Nunez to capitalize and level the match.
The second half was a defensive battle, with neither side able to break the deadlock despite several opportunities. Florida Southern outshot West Alabama 15-5, with seven shots on goal compared to UWA's three. Goalkeeper Timon Dressel played a pivotal role for the Tigers, making six saves to keep the Moccasins at bay.
The match became physical late, with both teams combining for 25 fouls. Multiple yellow cards were issued, including two for UWA's
Ellis Williamson, resulting in his ejection at full time.
West Alabama (1-0-1) will look to build on this performance as they head to Birmingham, Alabama, for a neutral-site match against Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, September 14th, at Oak Mountain High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
