LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team fell, 70-63, to the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans on Thursday night.
The West Alabama (10-10, 6-8 GSC) offense had spurts of success on Thursday but struggled with consistency on that end of the floor, resulting in a 36 percent shooting percentage which ultimately propelled Trevecca Nazarene (15-5, 10-4 GSC) to their seven-point victory.
Reigning GSC Freshman of the Week, Elliot Tulip and Marcellious Lockett got West Alabama going in the first half as the duo scored nine of the Tigers' first 13 points, giving UWA a two-point lead early. Trevecca Nazarene's Brett Wright came off the bench and buried a three to give the Trojans their first lead of the game at the 11:41 mark before a basket from Thaddeus Williams and back-to-back put backs from Michael McIntosh put West Alabama back out in front. With 8:16 left in the half, the Tigers' Jaylen Lemons and the Trojans' Jalen Page went back-and-forth, trading baskets for the remainder of the period. Page finished the half 14 points while Lemons poured in 10 as Trevecca Nazarene took a 38-32 lead into the break.
Both West Alabama and Trevecca shot 40 percent from floor in the first half while the Trojans shot 44 percent from deep compared to 23 percent for the Tigers.
Page picked up right where he left off in the second half, drilling a mid range jumper on the Trojans first possession. Down eight, a three from Tulip and a pair of midrange jumpers from Charles Fofanah carried an 11-4 UWA run, cutting Trevecca Nazarene's lead down to one, five and a half minutes into the period. When it seemed as though the Tigers were in an offensive rhythm, their offense went cold, going nearly four minutes without scoring. West Alabama's cold spell led to Trevecca taking a 53-43 lead with 9:52 left to play. Courtesy of Dadrevius Weathers, Lemons, and Lockett, UWA's offense got back on track as the Tigers made it a four-point game with 5:33 remaining. While West Alabama stayed within arms reach, they could never recapture the lead late as the Trojans went on to win, 70-63.
Lemons finished with a team-high 17 points while Lockett added 12.
UWA will be back in action on Saturday when they host the Lee Flames for a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
