Five Tigers Score in Double Figures in 77-68 Win over Bulldogs

JACKSON, Tenn. - The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team secured a big time road win over the Union Bulldogs, 77-68, on Saturday night.

It was a balanced offensive attack for West Alabama (9-5, 5-3 GSC) as five Tigers scored in double figures while they held Union (7-6, 3-4 GSC) to 41 percent shooting and 25 percent from three in their nine-point win over the Bulldogs.

"We had a really tough film session yesterday after the loss to Christian Brothers," said head coach Nick Woodruff. "We followed that film session with a really good practice last night and had great effort  today."

After a disappointing result on Thursday against Christian Brothers, West Alabama came out of the gates with a vengeance on Saturday. The Tigers trailed 6-5 early until a basket from Rasean Frederick ignited a massive 25-6 UWA run, giving the Tigers a commanding 30-12 lead with 7:50 minutes left in the first half. Up 12, West Alabama kept their foot on the gas, not allowing the Bulldogs to get within 10 points as a three from Travion McCray pushed UWA's lead back out to 16 with 2:55 left in the period. For the remainder of the half, both teams traded baskets with a pair of free throws from Thaddeus Williams sending West Alabama to the break up 44-28.

UWA shot 45 percent from the floor while holding Union to 31 percent in the first half, leading to their 16-point lead.

After a tough first half, the Bulldogs responded to begin the second half as they used a 7-0 run to cut the Tigers lead to nine, three and half minutes in. Union continued to chip away at West Alabama's lead, getting it down to four points after a three from Devaki Garr at the 11:07 mark of the second period. After seeing their lead dwindle to four, UWA regained control of the game as back-to-back threes from Marcellious Lockett and a rare three from Frederick put the Tigers back up by 10. West Alabama's lead treaded around 10 while big baskets from McCray and Frederick down the stretch secured a nine-point road win for  the Tigers.

Frederick finished with a team-high 16 points, five rebounds, and three steals while Williams, Lockett, McCray, Jaylen Lemons all finished in double figures.

"We played really well offensively and defensively in the first half," Woodruff continued. "In that second half, Union began to comeback but we just kept answering the bell with big shot after big shot."

West Alabama will now return home on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. matchup against AUM.
