MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's soccer team suffered its first Gulf South Conference loss of the season on the road Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Montevallo at Varsity Field.
The Falcons found the back of the net early in the first half, with Dominic Kienzle scoring in the 19th minute off an assist from Dakota Hart, which proved to be the game-winner.
Despite the early deficit, UWA created several scoring opportunities throughout the match, outshooting the Falcons 9-8 in the second half and 13-20 overall. The Tigers placed seven shots on target but couldn't find an equalizer against a strong Montevallo defense and goalkeeper Andre Etcheverry, who finished with seven saves.
Goalkeeper Charlie Walker anchored the Tigers on the defensive end, tallying six saves while facing 20 shots from Montevallo's attack.
The loss drops West Alabama to 3-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in GSC play, while Montevallo improves to 3-2-4 overall and 2-0-2 in the conference.
The Tigers will look to bounce back on the road Friday, October 10th, when they face Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
