LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball returned to action in a big way as the Tigers defeated the Williams Baptist Eagles, 108-55 inside Pruitt Hall on Tuesday night.
West Alabama's (11-1, 6-0 GSC) offense was firing on all cylinders again as UWA shot 62 percent from the floor and 59.1 percent from three in their dominant victory over Williams Baptist (9-2 NAIA). The Tigers' bench also scored 61 points, led by KJ Anderson who scored 21 points on seven consecutive made threes. Anderson's seven threes is tied for the most in a game amongst GSC teams this season.
"I'm so proud of the guys," said head coach Nick Woodruff. "We've only had two practices to prepare for Williams Baptist which was tough because they are a hard team to prepare for. KJ Anderson played great tonight. That's what we signed him for because we know he's capable of shooting the ball like that."
West Alabama opened the game with a 46-28 lead over Williams Baptist at halftime. The Eagles initially took an early lead with a three-pointer by Jesse Washington at the 19:20 mark, but West Alabama responded with a strong showing from Christian Thompson, who contributed multiple layups and a tip-ins over the course of the first half. Caleb Parr also made an impact with a three-pointer at 8:22. The Eagles struggled with turnovers, while the Tigers' Thompson, Rasean Frederick, and Elliot Tulip turned those turnovers into points which led to a double-digit lead for UWA. Thompson recorded a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double in the first half, leading West Alabama to a 46-28.
The Tigers shot 51.6 percent from the floor in the half while holding the Eagles to 40 percent from the field.
UWA turned it up a notch in the second half, extending their lead with a strong offensive performance to secure a 108-55 victory over the Eagles. Tulip set the tone, by adding a three-pointer to push the lead to 51-30. Parr's layup and subsequent defensive rebound led to additional fast-break points, including Tulip's two free throws at 16:45. The home team maintained momentum with a series of three-pointers, by KJ Anderson. Anderson went 7-7 from three in 15 minutes to push out the Tigers lead even further. With Anderson's three-point shooting and baskets from Amillion Buggs, West Alabama cruised to a 53-point win.
Along with Anderson's 21-point barrage, Thompson contributed significantly with 17 points, securing 13 rebounds and recording two steals. Tulip added 13 points, including three three-pointers, while Frederick chipped in with eight points and five rebounds.
West Alabama will return to conference play on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. matchup against Christian Brothers.
