CLINTON, Miss. – The West Alabama baseball team split a doubleheader against Mississippi College on Friday, winning the opener 4-2 before falling 3-1 in the nightcap at Frierson Field.
Game One: West Alabama 4, Mississippi College 2
Behind a strong performance on the mound from Bryant Quimby and timely hitting, the Tigers (5-5, 1-0 GSC) secured a 4-2 victory in the series opener.
Mississippi College (4-4, 0-1 GSC) struck first in the bottom of the second when JT Vance launched a solo home run to center field for a 1-0 lead.
However, West Alabama responded in the third. Eli Burwash scored on a Joe Watkins double down the left-field line, and Nick Wilson followed with a sacrifice fly to put UWA ahead 2-1.
The Tigers extended their lead in the fourth. Will Wood delivered an RBI single up the middle, scoring Nick Thibodeau. Moments later, Jake Goolsby was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing Bryce Newman home to make it 4-1.
Quimby (1-2) turned in a dominant outing, allowing just two hits and one earned run over 7.1 innings with three strikeouts. Mississippi College managed to scratch across an unearned run in the eighth, but Jack Hoppenjans closed the door in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Game Two: Mississippi College 3, West Alabama 1
Mississippi College (5-4, 1-1 GSC) responded in the second game, capitalizing on West Alabama miscues to claim a 3-1 win.
The Choctaws took advantage of an early throwing error in the first inning, plating two unearned runs. Vance walked and advanced to second, while Bryce Capobianco moved to third on the miscue. Korey Cooper then grounded out to second, allowing Capobianco to score and give MC a 2-0 lead.
West Alabama cut the deficit in the fourth when Blake Vineyard doubled down the left-field line, driving in Watkins. However, the Tigers struggled to generate more offense despite collecting seven hits.
Mississippi College added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Beau Kirsch, scoring Banks Hyde for a 3-1 advantage.
Maxwell Schumacher (0-1) took the loss for UWA despite not allowing an earned run in four innings of work. Caleb Peterson (1-1) earned the win for MC, while Jack Bell recorded his second save of the season.
The Tigers and Choctaws will conclude their series on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
