Baseball Sweeps Series Against Warhawks

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama completed a doubleheader sweep over Auburn Montgomery on Saturday at Tartt Field, securing a 6-3 victory in Game One and a dominant 10-3 win in Game Two. The Tigers improved to 8-7 on the season and 4-2 in Gulf South Conference (GSC) play, while the Warhawks dropped to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in GSC play. With the wins, UWA swept the three-game series against AUM.

Game One: West Alabama 6, Auburn-Montgomery 3
West Alabama took an early lead and never looked back, powered by home runs from Joe Watkins and Blake Vineyard. Watkins opened the scoring in the first inning with a solo shot to left field. In the third, Vineyard extended the lead with a two-run blast, bringing home Watkins for a 3-0 advantage.

AUM responded in the fourth with an RBI single by Ryan Revera, but UWA capitalized on key opportunities in the sixth. Eli Burwash singled through the left side to drive in a run, followed by Watkins drawing a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 5-1. Auburn Montgomery added runs in the seventh and eighth, but Vineyard's RBI single in the eighth sealed the victory.

Maxwell Schumacher (1-1) earned the win for the Tigers, delivering six strong innings while allowing just one run on nine hits with two strikeouts. Judah Buckner closed out the game for his first save of the season. Payte Williams (0-3) took the loss for AUM.

Game Two: West Alabama 10, Auburn-Montgomery 3
The Tigers wasted no time in the nightcap, erupting for five runs in the first inning. Jake Goolsby drove in two with a single to right field, followed by Fisher Moss adding an RBI single and Will Wood drawing a bases-loaded walk. Eli Burwash capped the inning with an RBI hit-by-pitch.

West Alabama padded its lead in the fifth with a two-run single by Burwash and an AUM error that allowed two more runs to score, making it 9-0. Moss added a solo homer in the sixth for the final run of the game.

Auburn-Montgomery avoided the shutout with three runs in the seventh, courtesy of back-to-back homers from Tyrese Rooks and Zach Dew, but it was not enough to overcome UWA's dominant performance.

Gates Pee (1-0) picked up the win, throwing five shutout innings while allowing just five hits and striking out three. Jayce James (0-1) suffered the loss for AUM, giving up five runs in the first inning.

West Alabama will return to action on Tuesday, February 25, when they travel to Mobile to take on Spring Hill at 5 p.m.
