LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama struggled to generate offense against No. 14 Delta State, falling 6-0 in Friday night's Gulf South Conference matchup at Tartt Field.
Delta State (20-7, 13-3 GSC) struck early, plating four runs in the second inning to take control of the game. The rally started with a bases-loaded walk to Cole Thompson, followed by a two-run double from Drew Capobianco. Wes Warnock capped off the inning with an RBI groundout, giving the Statesmen a commanding 4-0 lead.
The Tigers (16-13, 10-6 GSC) were limited to just four hits in the contest, as Delta State ace Drake Fontenot (7-0) threw a complete-game shutout. Fontenot struck out five while walking just one batter, holding UWA scoreless through nine innings.
Delta State added insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings, with Brendan McCauley driving in a run on a single and Warnock delivering an RBI double to push the lead to 6-0.
Maxwell Schumacher (1-4) took the loss for West Alabama, allowing five runs on six hits in 5.2 innings while striking out three. The UWA bullpen held the Statesmen in check over the final three innings, but the Tigers were unable to generate any offensive momentum.
West Alabama will look to bounce back on Saturday, March 22, as the series continues with a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
