Baseball Drops Series Finale in Extra Inning Battle, Falls in Pitcher's Duel in Game Three

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama baseball team came up just short in a hard-fought extra-inning battle in game two before falling in a tight pitchers' duel in game three, as Delta State secured a doubleheader sweep at Tartt Field on Saturday.

Game 2: Delta State 6, West Alabama 5 (12 innings)
The Tigers (16-15, 10-8 GSC) battled through 12 innings but ultimately fell 6-5 after Delta State (22-7, 15-3 GSC) pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning.

West Alabama answered an early 2-0 deficit in the first inning, as Blake Vineyard doubled home Eli Burwash before stealing home to tie the game at 2-2. Both teams traded runs in the fifth, with Joe Watkins knocking an RBI double for UWA to even the score at 3-3.

The Statesmen regained the lead in the sixth on a two-run home run by Matthew Martinolich, but the Tigers responded in the bottom half with a solo homer from Jake Goolsby and an RBI groundout from Bryce Newman to tie the game once again at 5-5.

After five scoreless extra innings, Delta State's Dylan Dendy doubled home Wes Warnock in the 12th for the game-winning run. UWA was held hitless over the final six innings as DSU's Josh Hill (1-0) picked up the win with two perfect innings of relief. Owen Hendry (1-2) took the loss for the Tigers despite a strong relief outing.

Game 3: Delta State 1, West Alabama 0
Game two saw dominant pitching on both sides, with Delta State's Logan Eldridge (3-2) outdueling UWA's Bryant Quimby (4-3) in a 1-0 defensive battle.

The lone run of the game came in the seventh inning when Wes Warnock drove in Tyler Janos with an infield single. The Tigers had opportunities but managed only three hits in the game, two of which came from Watkins.

Quimby pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits while striking out six, but the Tigers couldn't generate enough offense against Eldridge, who struck out four in the shutout performance.

West Alabama will look to bounce back when they return to action on Tuesday, March 25, with a road matchup against Albany State. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Albany, Georgia.
