Baseball Falls Short in Doubleheader Against Bulldogs

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama baseball suffered a pair of setbacks on Friday, falling to Union 6-2 in game one and 5-4 in game two at Tartt Field.

The Tigers (17-17, 10-10 GSC) will look to bounce back in the series finale against the Bulldogs (13-19, 7-12 GSC) on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Game 1: Union 6 - UWA 2
West Alabama took an early lead in the first inning when Nick Wilson doubled to left field, driving in Fisher Moss. However, Union responded in the fourth with a two-run single from Carson Chavies to go ahead 2-1. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the seventh and sealed the victory with a two-run double by Canyon Pace in the ninth.

Wilson led UWA at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Jake Goolsby also added an RBI double in the eighth inning, but the Tigers were unable to generate more offense. Maxwell Schumacher (1-5) took the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits over five innings.

Game 2: Union 5 - UWA 4
Union struck late in game two, scoring three unearned runs in the sixth and adding two more in the seventh to take a 5-0 lead. West Alabama mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, with Blake Vineyard blasting a grand slam to left field, cutting the deficit to one. However, the rally fell short as Union held on for the win.

Vineyard finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs, while Wilson and Bryce Newman recorded the Tigers' other two hits. Bryant Quimby (4-4) took the loss, giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits in six innings.

West Alabama will try to salvage the series in Saturday's finale, with first pitch set for 11 a.m. at Tartt Field.
