LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Football team is set to take on the Barton College Bulldogs on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.
No. 13 West Alabama (3-0) enters Saturday's contest after a 28-24 win over Charleston this past Saturday. As for Barton College (0-3), they come into the weekend winless on the year with defeats coming at the hands of Virginia State, West Virginia State, and North Greenville.Â
Head Coach Scott Cochran's motto once he arrived in Livingston was "own the fourth quarter". Three games into the 2025 season, the Tigers have done just that. Coming into Saturday's contest, UWA is outscoring opponents 39-17 in the final quarter which has propelled them to their perfect 3-0 record. Offensively, Quarterback Spencer Arceneaux is off to a terrific start. The senior ranks within the top-10 in the country in total touchdowns with eight and has recorded 748 total yards. Putting up those types of numbers through three weeks has led to Areceneaux being named the GSC Offensive Player of the Week twice while also garnering recognition from some of the games greatest minds such as Archie Manning.Â
Arceneaux's brilliance has led West Alabama's offense to 31.0 points per game. The senior is still developing chemistry with his Wide Receivers in Dearrius Nelson, TD Parker, Houston Johnson, etc., putting the Tigers' offensive potential over the moon. On the ground, UWA's Brayden Jenkins, Tyler Smith, Contravious Blanks, Ja'Marian Johnson, and Michael Dujon have all recorded carries. Jenkins didn't play this past week, but through two games played, the junior led the GSC in rushing yards with 184. Jenkins is on schedule to be active this weekend and will most likely split carries with Blanks who is skyrocketing up the depth chart.
On the defensive side of the ball, West Alabama's front seven continues to present problems for opposing offenses. JT Hooten is the reigning GSC Defensive Player of the Week after recording a career-high 17 tackles in the Tigers' win over Charleston. Devin Arrington and Michael McGregor are all massive players in the Linebacker group while the front consisting of Marquis Robinson, Jalin Herbert, Jacob Thornton, and Elias Dunn have led the Tigers to 10 sacks which is tied for fifth most in the nation.
In the secondary, Jamari Jemison and Devonte Harris are lock down corners while safeties Jaden Taylor and Issac Williams are two of the best overall players on UWA's roster. Williams didn't play this past week due to injury but is on pace to return this Saturday.
On the offensive side for Barton College, they're averaging 16.3 points and 219.3 yards per game. The Bulldogs aren't creating many explosive plays through the air as their Quarterback, Trevor Nored carries just two touchdown passes on his ledger through three games. Nored's favorite target is 6'4" wideout, Isaiah Jacobs. Jacobs has racked up 228 receiving yards and two touchdowns thus far, including a four reception, 126 yard performance against West Virginia State.Â
On the ground, Jackson Parrish leads the Bulldogs with 126 yards and three touchdowns.Â
Defensively, Barton College is allowing 34.67 points and 445.3 yards per game. The Bulldogs' rushing defense has been their Achilles heel. Through three games, Barton College has allowed 581 rushing yards (193.7 yards per game). Linebacker Keno Jones leads the team with 46 tackles and has forced two turnovers. His Linebacker partner, Ja'Correy Bible ranks second amongst the team with 26 tackles.
With Barton College struggling to stop the run, West Alabama will put the Bulldogs' run defense to the test again on Saturday.
Kickoff for Saturday's game between UWA and Barton College is set for 6:00 p.m.
