LIVINGSTON, Ala. – David Nunez scored twice in the first half to propel the University of West Alabama men's soccer team to a 2-1 Gulf South Conference win over Lee University on Sunday afternoon at the UWA Soccer Field.
The Tigers wasted little time asserting themselves, breaking through in the 18th minute when Nunez buried a shot off an assist from Oisin Griffin. Ten minutes later, he doubled the advantage, finishing a sequence set up by Harrison Page and Ronny Wakelin to put UWA ahead 2-0.
Lee pulled one back in the 41st minute courtesy of Daniel Garvilla, trimming the margin to 2-1 at halftime. Despite a second-half push from the Flames, goalkeeper Charlie Walker stood tall with six saves, including several key stops down the stretch, to preserve the Tigers' lead.
Both teams finished with 10 shots, but UWA was more clinical, placing five on frame compared to Lee's seven. The Tigers also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. The match saw four yellow cards and a late red card for Lee's Sam Clark in the 90th minute.
With the victory, West Alabama improves to 2-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in GSC play, while Lee drops to 3-3-0 and 0-2-0 in the league.
The Tigers return home on Friday, September 26, to host Spring Hill College at 7 p.m. under the lights at the UWA Soccer Field.
