LIVINGSTON, Ala. — West Alabama earned its first conference victory since November 2, 2023, defeating Montevallo in a thrilling five-set match at Pruitt Hall on Tuesday night.
The Tigers started strong, capturing the first set 25-21 behind key kills from Klára Bobánová and Cadence Goeden, along with a pivotal block from Katerina Korre and Gracie Pierscinski. Montevallo countered in the second and third sets, 25-22 and 25-20, putting pressure on West Alabama with aggressive attacks and service aces that kept the Tigers on their heels.
West Alabama regrouped in the fourth set, building an early lead and fending off a Montevallo comeback to claim a 26-24 win, forcing a decisive fifth set. The final set remained tightly contested, with both teams trading points in a back-and-forth battle. West Alabama gained a slight edge on key plays from Bobánová and Goeden, and a final kill from Goeden sealed the 15-13 victory, giving the Tigers a hard-fought conference opener.
Bobánová led the Tigers with 21 kills, 11 digs, while Goeden added 18 kills, seven digs. Jana Petkovic was instrumental with 58 assists, and Snow contributed 12 kills and five blocks. The win highlighted West Alabama's resilience, balanced offensive attack, and determination to start Gulf South Conference play on a high note.
The Tigers will look to carry their momentum into Thursday's home matchup against Auburn Montgomery (AUM), aiming to continue their strong start in Gulf South Conference play.
