No. 25 Tigers Take 2-0 Series Lead over Choctaws

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – No. 25 West Alabama protected home field Friday afternoon, sweeping a Gulf South Conference doubleheader over Mississippi College with a 7-5 victory in game one followed by a 4-2 win in game two at Tartt Field. The Tigers improve to 9-0 overall and will look to complete the series sweep Saturday at 1 p.m.

Game One – UWA 7, Mississippi College 5

West Alabama used a balanced offensive attack and timely pitching to hold off the Choctaws in the opener.

The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the first when Nick Wilson delivered an RBI single to score Hudson Walburn. UWA added three more runs in the third, highlighted by Aaron Wallace's RBI triple and run-scoring singles from Wilson and Kyle Blevins to build a 4-0 lead.

Mississippi College chipped away with a run in the fifth and a solo homer in the sixth, but the Tigers responded immediately. Rashad Robinson ripped a two-run double to left center in the bottom of the sixth, extending the lead to 6-2.

After the Choctaws closed within 6-5 behind a two-run seventh and a solo home run in the eighth, West Alabama answered once again. Walburn laced an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to provide a key insurance run.

Baker Green (1-0) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits over five strong innings. Camden Lyke picked up his first save of the season, striking out two in a scoreless ninth to seal the 7-5 victory.

Wilson and Robinson each collected two hits and two RBI to lead the Tigers' 12-hit effort, while Wallace added two hits and an RBI.

Game Two – UWA 4, Mississippi College 2

The Tigers leaned on pitching and situational hitting in the nightcap to secure the series.

Will Wood opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single up the middle. UWA added two more in the fourth as Tanner Jones delivered a clutch two-run single to right center, scoring Kyle Blevins and Wayne Wilkerson to make it 3-0. Wilson added an RBI single in the fifth to push the advantage to 4-0.

Colin Woodham (1-0) was sharp in his start, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing four hits and striking out six. The Choctaws made things interesting in the seventh with a two-run homer, but Cade Miller shut the door, recording his second save of the season to preserve the 4-2 win.

Jones finished with two RBI, while Wood, Wilson, and Blevins each recorded a hit. West Alabama managed just five hits but capitalized on opportunities and defensive miscues by Mississippi College.

With the two victories, the Tigers remain unbeaten and have secured the series. West Alabama will aim for the three-game sweep Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Tartt Field.
