Tennis Set for Matchup Against Division I Hornets

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's and Women's Tennis team is set for a 1:00 p.m. matchup against Alabama State.

The West Alabama Women (1-1) enter after a hard fought battle with Samford on Thursday while the West Alabama Men (2-0) come in after wins over Spring Hill and Tuskegee.

For Alabama State's Women's team (1-2), they enter Saturday's match after falling to UAB, 7-0, while their Men's Team (2-3) come into play after a 4-0 loss to Alabama.

UWA's Women's team proved that they're capable of playing on the Division I level after their showing against Samford on Thursday. In that match, Shaira Rivera, Valentina Mutilba, and Jenaila Prulla all picked up singles wins while the doubles duo of Alexa Milliam and Mutilba won their doubles match.

Rivera, Milliam, and Mutilba lead the Tigers while Prulla, Jian Ibrahim, and Nanoka Kazama gives UWA a big boost in the depth department. These six Tigers will more than likely be the ones that competes against Alabama State on Saturday.

For West Alabama Men's Team, they've been nearly perfect through two matches. Gabriel Garay, Federico Iturbe, Itaru Kikuchi, Afonso Portugal, and Jacob Tapia are all 2-0 in singles play to begin the year. Portugal is the reigning GSC Player of the Week after sweeping all of his matches last week.

UWA will face their toughest test of the young season in the form of the Hornets.

Alabama State's Men's team has picked up wins over the Citadel and AUM thus far in 2026. The Hornets have struggled to compete against higher level of competition, losing to Samford, 7-0, No. 22 Florida State, 4-0, and Alabama, 4-0. Flor De Sitter, Milan Ristov, and Eloi Roux have won singles matches for the Hornets and are set to compete against West Alabama on Saturday.

For the Hornet's Women's team, their lone win of the season has come against GSC foe, AUM. Through a handful of matches, Kesmat El Tawil and Alexia Campagna hold the best singles records on the team.

While West Alabama will be going up a level to play Alabama State, both the Men's and Women's team have a great opportunity to upset the Hornets on the road.

First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. in Montgomery, Alabama.
