LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama men's track and field team saw two student-athletes, Dedric Hicks and Gary Mata, named to the Gulf South Conference All-Academic Team on Friday.
In addition to those honors, 49 UWA student-athletes earned spots on the GSC Honor Roll across men's basketball, women's basketball, and men's and women's track and field.
Hicks earned one of the conference's top academic honors following a standout indoor season both on the track and in the classroom. The senior claimed the GSC Indoor Shot Put Championship with a personal-best throw of 17.68 meters at the Conference Championships which capped off his indoor campaign. Leading up to the championship, Hicks recorded top-three finishes in four indoor competitions in the shot put. Academically, the senior Exercise Science major posted a 3.78 GPA during the fall semester.
Mata also delivered a strong indoor campaign as West Alabama's top distance runner. The senior finished in the top-five in three of four meets and set a personal best in the mile at the GSC Championships. He recorded a time of 4:15.37, placing seventh overall. A Health Science major, Mata earned a 3.53 GPA during the fall semester.
Hicks and Mata continue to lead UWA as they resume their outdoor season this weekend at Ole Miss and Belhaven.
