Mata, Breton Set New School Records as Tigers Conclude Washu Distance Carnival

ST. LOUIS, MO. - Gary Mata and Mathis Breton highlighted the University of West Alabama Track Program's efforts at the Washu Distance Carnival this weekend as both set new UWA school records.

Mata is the new school record holder in the Men's 5000m as the senior crossed the finish line in 14:56.87 on Friday afternoon. Mata beat the record by 12 second, a record that stood for nine years for the Tigers.

As for Breton, he's the new school record holder in the 10000m as the Graduate finished with a time of 31:24.58. The former record was held by Victor Onyaga who set it in 2018 with a time of 31:59.94.

Along with standout performances from Mata and Breton, Lorenzo Pelusi and Julian Council also competed in the 5000m. Pelusi turned in a time of 15:31.15 while Council finished in 15:46.52. Jonathan Phillips competed in the 5000m event at St. Louis University on Saturday and closed the weekend for the Tigers with a 15:43.03 time.

West Alabama's Women's Distance Runners did not compete this weekend as the Tigers now gear up for the UWG Invitational on April 3 in Carrollton, Georgia.
