LIVINGSTON, Ala. – No. 4 West Alabama saw its final midweek contest of the regular season slip away on Tuesday afternoon, as Spring Hill used a pair of late offensive surges to defeat the Tigers, 13-8, at Tartt Field.
West Alabama (32-12) finished with 13 hits on the afternoon, highlighted by a standout performance from
Rashad Robinson, but a six-run sixth inning followed by a five-run ninth from Spring Hill (33-14) proved to be the difference.
The Badgers wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard, plating two runs in the opening frame behind an RBI single from Jordan Black and a sacrifice fly from John Webb. The Tigers answered immediately, cutting the deficit to 2-1 on an RBI groundout by
Nick Wilson.
West Alabama surged ahead in the second inning, capitalizing on patience and timely hitting.
Austin Thacker delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game before
Hudson Walburn lined a two-RBI single up the middle, giving the Tigers a 4-2 advantage.
The Tigers extended their lead in the fourth inning when Robinson launched his first home run of the day, pushing the score to 5-2 and giving West Alabama early control.
That control held until the sixth inning, when Spring Hill's offense broke through. The Badgers strung together five hits in the frame, including a two-RBI single from Webb, to spark a six-run inning that flipped a 5-2 deficit into an 8-5 lead.
West Alabama chipped away in the eighth inning as Robinson struck again, blasting a two-run homer to cut the margin to 8-7 and bring the Tigers back within striking distance.
However, Spring Hill delivered the decisive blow in the ninth. A three-run home run from Jaylen Jones highlighted a five-run inning that extended the lead to 13-7. The Tigers managed to push across one run in the bottom half following an error but could not complete the comeback.
Robinson led the Tigers offensively, going 4-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs, and three runs scored.
Aaron Wallace added three hits, while Walburn drove in two runs.
Kaiden Jones also contributed a pair of hits in the loss.
On the mound,
Cade Miller (1-3) was charged with the loss after surrendering four runs in the pivotal sixth inning. Nate Helton (5-1) earned the win for Spring Hill, tossing 5.1 innings in relief.
Despite the setback, West Alabama now turns its full attention to a critical Gulf South Conference series with UAH, where the Tigers will have an opportunity to secure the GSC Regular Season Championship.
The series begins with a doubleheader on Friday, April 24, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. at Tartt Field.
