LIVINGSTON, Ala. — #10 West Alabama battled through a Saturday doubleheader against Alabama Huntsville, dominating game one in an 8-0 shutout before falling 3-1 in game two.
With the split, the Tigers move to 33-13 overall and now turn their attention to Sunday's regular season finale, where a win would clinch a share of the Gulf South Conference Regular Season Championship, pending results from the Lee at Trevecca Nazarene series.
Game One - UWA 8, UAH 0
West Alabama set the tone early in game one, using timely hitting and dominant pitching to secure the shutout victory. The Tigers struck first in the opening inning, as
Nick Wilson delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home
Rashad Robinson for the game's first run. They added to the lead in the second when
Layth Holiday doubled to left field, scoring
Kyle Blevins to make it 2-0.
The offense continued to build throughout the afternoon. In the fourth inning,
Tanner Jones singled to center to plate Blevins once again, extending the lead to 3-0. The Tigers broke things open in the seventh, highlighted by a two-RBI double from
Aaron Wallace that pushed the advantage to 5-0. West Alabama added three more runs in the eighth, capitalizing on defensive miscues and another sacrifice fly from Wilson to seal the 8-0 win.
Baker Green delivered a strong outing on the mound, earning the win after tossing 6.2 scoreless innings while allowing just five hits. He was backed by
Ryan Ladner and
Bryant Akridge, who combined to preserve the shutout. Offensively, Wallace led the way with three hits and two RBIs, while Blevins added three hits and scored three runs. Robinson also made an impact at the top of the lineup, scoring three times and swiping a base.
Game Two- UAH 3, UWA 1
In game two, Alabama Huntsville responded quickly, using a pair of solo home runs in the second inning from Taylor Bush and Gavin Galenza to take an early 2-0 lead. West Alabama answered in the bottom half of the inning when
Tanner Jones doubled to right field, driving in
Austin Thacker to cut the deficit to 2-1.
However, that would be the Tigers' only run of the game. UAH added an insurance run in the fourth on an RBI double from Galenza, extending the lead to 3-1. Despite tallying nine hits, West Alabama was unable to capitalize on its opportunities, leaving runners on base in key moments throughout the contest.
Colin Woodham took the loss on the mound after allowing three runs over three innings of work.
Nolan Phillips and
Laney Keeton provided solid relief efforts, combining to hold UAH scoreless over the final four innings and give the Tigers a chance to rally late.
Walburn paced the Tigers offensively in game two with two hits, while Thacker and
Diego Bryant also contributed multi-hit efforts. Despite the offensive production, timely hits proved to be the difference as UAH held on for the 3-1 victory, clinching them a spot in the GSC Tournament.
With the series now tied, all eyes shift to Saturday's noon matchup in Livingston. A win for West Alabama would secure at least a share of the GSC Regular Season Championship, adding even more intensity to the final game of the regular season.
